Extremadura, November

Dehesa, woodsmoke, and the week the ibérico pigs move under the oaks.

8 daysGroup of 10From €3,640NovemberWinter

November in Extremadura is for people who like a low sun and a long lunch. We base in a restored casa in the sierra, walk out through holm oak and granite, and eat in kitchens that still keep their own pigs. Mérida’s Roman stones are a half-day, not a checklist. This week is about a landscape that most travellers skip on the way to Andalusia.

The days

Itinerary

  1. Day 01

    Cáceres

Arrive into the old town after dark. A short walk, a simple supper, beds in a house with thick walls.

  2. Day 02

    Into the sierra

Transfer west. Settle into the casa. Afternoon walk among the oaks. Fire in the evening.

  3. Day 03

    Dehesa circuit

A full day on estate tracks. If the montanera has begun, we keep a polite distance from the pigs.

  4. Day 04

    Kitchen morning

With a cook who still makes migas the way her grandmother did. Lunch lasts until the light slants.

  5. Day 05

    Mérida

The theatre, the bridge, the museum if anyone wants it. Back before dark for soup.

  6. Day 06

    Trujillo and the plains

A hill town and a long view. We do not linger in souvenir streets.

  7. Day 07

    Last walk

A shorter loop, a longer lunch, packing that can wait.

  8. Day 08

    Out via Madrid or Seville

Morning transfer. We time it for the late-morning trains.
