Extremadura

Dehesa, granite, and towns that most travellers skip on the way to Andalusia.

Extremadura is oak country. The light in November is low and useful. Kitchens still keep their own pigs. Roman stones in Mérida are a half-day, not a reason to rush the sierra. We come here because the landscape is still a working one.

November for the montanera and empty roads. Spring is milder and less interesting to us.
